The Guys of Primary Talk Guided Reading

What should I use for guided reading in my classroom? I am struggling to find the perfect leveled readers for my students. Where do I start? Have you asked yourself any of these questions - I know I have! Hello everyone, it's Chad here from the Male Kindergarten Teacher Blog! Today I am excited to share with you how you can use Bob Book's boxed sets for guided reading and take-home book bags in your classroom. Plus Bob Books has graciously provided a Bob Books Bundle to giveaway to one of our amazing readers!

What is Guided Reading?

According to Scholastic, guided reading is "an instructional approach that involves a teacher. working with a small group of students who demonstrate similar reading behaviors and can all read similar levels of texts. The text is easy enough for students to read with your skillful support" (Scholastic).

What are Bob Books?

Bob Books provides parents, teachers, and students with a variety of box sets to making reading fun, memorable, and rewarding! The colorful, simplistic drawings keep students engaged and keep them wanting more and more. This is why I own about ten sets of Bob Books! They're seriously that amazing.

Learning to read is such a special time in a child's life. Bob Books makes it fun and successful! In kindergarten, students learn to read. We first start off by learning the letters, sounds, and then link sounds to form words. I use Bob Books in small groups or one-on-one instruction to focus on alphabetic principle, phonemic awareness, sight words, and much more!

I use Bob Books for my take-home book bags. Every child in my class receives a book bag with a leveled book. They take the book bag home and read it with their parents. When the child can read the book independently, they bring it back to school. The child reads it to myself or my aide, and we send a new book home with the child. This is a great way to challenge the readers in my classroom and to focus on specific skills too!

Bob Books has a variety of books for all readers. I usually start by sending home their new First Stories boxed set. Each box contains 12 books that are leveled A-C.
